BRHL Central ScoutingLuke Wile Mock DraftLuke comes up with his projections of who goes where in the BRHL2 Draft Aug 8 in Montreal. 1. Thrashers-Matthew Duchene Skill: A dynamic puck handler, has excellent vision, and understands the game very well. Matt is very dangerous when in tight. Scouting Report: Matt is very dangerous when in tight. Very intelligent player with excellent skills - very quick and very elusive with puck. Average size but very good core strength - during rush has strength to hold off defender and drive the puck deep into the offensive zone. A good skater who is very agile - has an extra gear to pull away from defenders or to catch a man on the backcheck. Competes hard for loose pucks. Plays well at both ends of the rink - in defensive situations sorts out coverages well making sure to take a man. Selected as OHL Eastern Conference Top Stickhandler and Playmaker in OHL Coaches Poll. NHL Potential: Will make the transition to the next level with ease to Atlanta’s top 9. Some predict with the recent acquisition of Malkin if the Thrashers may look at Hedman, but I doubt it. Style compares to: Joe Sakic 2. Devils-John Tavares Skill: A highly skilled goal scorer- great touch-very good hockey sensequick release and soft hands. Scouting Report: A lot was made of the battle between Tavares and Hedman coming into this WJC tournament. Named the MVP of the tournament Tavares made a very strong case as to why he is the top 2009 NHL draft prospect with one of the most dominant WJC performances in recent memory. Much of Canada’s success came on the PP and it can’t be ignored that the major reason for this was Tavares’s ability to find open ice around the net away from the puck and capitalize on pucks moving in and around the side of the slot area. His tenacity on the puck is outstanding and leads to great opportunities during zone play. It is very rare that he misses a chance around the net. NHL Potential: His scoring touch reminds me of Brett Hull. Offensive contributor in his rookie season. Style compares to: Brett Hull/Mike Bossy 3. Bruins-Victor Hedman Skill: A dynamic offensive defender with top level technical skills and a great understanding for the offensive side of the game. Scouting Report: Franchise defensemen like Victor Hedman are a highly sought after commodity in any draft year, this one being no exception. The 08/09 Swedish Elite League rookie of the year, Hedman is hands down the best offensive d-man in the draft and his potential should have development personnel for every NHL club salivating at the opportunity to get them in their system. He is coming off his second full season with MODO of the Swedish Elite League. He is in his element when he is able to rush the puck or jump into the play. With his great skating ability, he is no liability in his own end, but rarely a physical presence, he has to rely on his size and range of his stick to separate players from the puck. NHL Potential: A franchise defenseman. Style compares to: Jay Bowmesster 4. Sabres- Magnus Paajarvi- Svensson Skill: An elite offensive talent, pure goal scorer with a great nose for the net. Scouting Report: Paajarvi has emerged as a bona fide top five pick for the upcoming 2010 BRHL2 draft. He loves to dangle and is arguably one of the most skilled players available in the draft. His ability to go from standing still to full speed is unparalleled. He is a tremendous puck handler, with great outside rush ability and an unmatched capability of freezing defenders. Extremely talented around the puck, it’s his play away from the puck that truly shows off his value. An international veteran he has shown incredible poise in the past 2 WJC tournaments. He already has over 150 Swedish Elite League games under his belt and has been progressively getting better against the men. NHL Potential: Franchise offensive player up front competing for scoring titles and Selke trophies. Style compares to: Marian Hossa 5. Predators- Evander Kane Skill: A highly skilled forward that scores and plays with an edge. Will go to the tough spots. Scouting Report: There is a lot of interest in this young player and rightfully so. Kane has had an outstanding season with the Giants. A late addition to team Canada, Kane’s presence and role on the team adapted as the tournament went on, but was solely to provide energy and good strong physical play. Kane put his hard hat on in this tournament and was a consistent pain in other team’s sides as he dug for loose pucks down the boards. He raised his stock at the World Juniors and was a big member of the winning Canadian side. A true gem, can play on the edge and with some physical maturity will be great at the NHL level. Upside is scary when you add the improvement of strength. NHL Potential: Once he adds more strength and size, the sky is the limit. Style compares to: Devin Setoguchi 6. Ducks- Nazem Kadri Skill: Slick forward with very good puck skills. Able to slide off checks and is dangerous with the puck in the offensive zone. Scouting Report: Selected by the Kitchener Rangers in the 1st Round of 2006 OHL Draft, Kadri was part of the blockbuster trade between the Knights and Rangers that saw Mason join the Rangers for their 2008 Memorial Cup run and Kadri move to London for the start of the 08-09 season. A good skater with quick feet, Kadri saw time at both center and on the wing throughout the year. Suffered a broken jaw last November that put him out of action for a month. Displays good puck skills and ability to slide off checks. Effective on the rush coming down the off wing – willing to take the puck to middle of ice and use defender as screen for shot. NHL Potential: Top 6 forward to can create offence Will be a leader on any team he plays on. Style compares to: Marco Sturm 7. Flames-Brayden Schenn Skill: He brings a winning mentality to the rink. Explosive and competitive. Scouting Report: A perfect combination of grit and skill, Schenn can play any role and play it well. A gifted playmaker, Schenn is extremely hard on the puck and very rarely loses battles for pucks. He has strung together two very strong season’s in the WHL and has established himself as one of the more feared offensive talents in the league. The obvious comparison of style will be to his brother Luke, and although the younger Schenn brings a similar style of play to the other end of the rink, he also comes with added skill around the puck. He has strong leadership qualities and will fit in perfectly with any organization looking to build their team around skill and hard work. NHL Potential: Great leadership traits that should translate very well at the next level Style compares to: Doug Gilmour 8. Senators-Oliver Ekman-Larsson Skill: Great physical defensive play with great offensive skill and sense. Can be very effective at both ends of the ice. Scouting Report: Ekman-Larsson is a very confident skater with excellent offensive skills. His shot can be compared to that of pro level players, however it takes time to get off at times. He has great transitionally offensive ability and can start the rush effectively and quickly. He finished second in scoring by d-men during the World U18 championship with 8 points in 6 games. Has a strong ability to throw some crushing hits and is a very steady performer. He is very difficult to get around as he in impressively mobile and angles out very well. He has a strong pedigree, as both his father and grandfather were strong players in the Swedish leagues, with his grandfather even participating for Sweden in the 1972 winter Olympics in Sapporo, Japan. NHL Potential: Top 2 defenseman Style compares to: Tomas Kaberle 9. Lightning-Ryan Ellis Skill: Ellis has great vision and excellent poise while holding the puck at the point on the power play. Scouting Report: Ellis is a smaller d-man who is a good skater with excellent mobility. Gifted offensively, he moves the puck up the ice effectively with a good outlet pass or by skating with the puck. His ability to create time and space and be aware of all of his options is exceptional. Despite lack of size showed ability to defend against bigger players with good positional play. Distributes the puck well while quarterbacking the PP. Has showed grit and willingness to get involved physically. Despite that, there’s no doubt that his size will be questioned as well as his ability to defend physically at the next level. A talented offensive minded d-man who moves the puck very well and is great in transition. Rough showing at the WJHCs, but you can’t deny his skill level and shot. NHL Potential: #2 Dmen, with high offensive output. Will be a leader on any team he plays on. Hardest shot for his size that I’ve ever seen. Style compares to: Brian Rafalski 10. Flyers- Dmitri Kulikov Skill: Kulikov, is an effortless skater who controls the pace of a game like a veteran. Scouting Report: Simply put, the best defensive prospect to come through the QMJHL in a long time. VETERAN scout Dennis MacInnis added “Kulikov’s skill level is very high and he should mature into a very strong offensive option from the back end at the next level”. By far the best part of his game is his ability to think the game. His ability to make plays under pressure, find the open man, or make that difficult pass are things that occur on a nightly basis. He is an offensively skilled defender with good mobility and very good puck skills. He had a tremendous year; Kulikov led all d-men with 62 points in 57 games and was named the Defensive Rookie of the Year, the Rookie of the Year, the Best Professional Prospect and D-man of the Year by the QMJHL. Solid performance at the Memorial Cup confirmed our lofty ranking of this rearguard. A surprise, he played the entire NHL season, and played very well. Stock Has gone up considerably since last year. NHL Potential: Top Pairing Dman Style compares to: Niklas Kronwall 11. Sabres-Chris Kreider Skill: An excellent skater with explosive speed and acceleration. Great mix of size, strength and skill. Scouting Report: Despite playing in the NE Prep league Kreider has still emerged as a bona 1st round pick for the upcoming 2009 NHL draft. He has great size and potential. Has very good offensive skills and can be dangerous one-on-one. He can be hard to play against down low when he plays physical. He's not a big hitter, but he doesn't shy from contact. The most appealing thing about Kreider’s game is the fact that he combines all that size and strength with great agility and very good foot speed. He does have topend skills and the ability to make smart decisions and great plays at top speed in tight areas and with little time. Led all of BC in goals, and had an outstanding showing at the WJHCs. NHL Potential: Tremendous upside and he should be a top player at higher levels. Style compares to: Eric Staal 12. Flames- Scott Glennie Skill: A highly skilled offensive forward who can set it up and also finish. Great passer and shooter. Scouting Report: Glennie has top-end skills and the ability to make smart decisions and great plays at top speed in tight areas and with little time. His upside is tremendous and he should be a top player at higher levels. Glennie was the Wheat Kings second pick (29th overall) in the 2006 Bantam Draft. Played very well for his Wheat Kings in the playoffs before losing in the Eastern Conference Final to the Calgary Hitmen. No one will question his offensive vision as he can set it up and also score. Does play in all situations. He needs to improve the defensive and physical side of his game to create more room for himself at the next level. Strength will come naturally with maturity. NHL Potential: An offensive threat that will be a top six offensive forward- top line upside. Style compares to: Peter Mueller 13. Thrashers-Jared Cowen Scouting Report: Cowen is a former #1 overall pick in the Bantam Draft and also a key contributor to last years Memorial Cup champions the Spokane Chiefs. He is big, mean and mobile. Has good puck skills and will dominate people physically. Late this year he suffered a season ending knee injury that has somewhat affected his draft status. He is also well known for his leadership skills. Opponents are always aware when he is on the ice as he is mean and plays with an edge. Snubbed by Hockey Canada last year. He was extremely disappointing at the WJHCs in Dec-Jan. NHL Potential: He can be a top defenseman who Logs lots of PIMs. Style compares to: Chris Pronger 14. BlueJackets-Ryan O’Reilly Skill: Skilled player who can beat you with a good accurate shot or pass. Team leader. Scouting Report: O’Reilly followed up good rookie season with the Otters where he registered 52 pts with a 66 point campaign in 2008-09. Sees the ice well, reads and reacts quickly. Displays a good work ethic, on and off the ice. Battles extremely hard, protects the puck well and controls the play along the wall. Has been a horse for his team logging crazy amounts of ice time in every situation. His skating is anything but pretty but has improved since last year. Bloodlines bode well for Ryan, as his brother Cal played three years for the OHL’s Windsor Spitfires and is an NHL Draft pick of the Nashville Predators. Regarded as one of the best penalty killers and faceoff men in the OHL Western Conference. O’Reilly will be a highly sought after commodity early in the draft. Was the surprise of the NHLs rookie class as he contributed to the avalanche and their spot in the playoffs. Will not fall past 17. NHL Potential: Career solid 2nd line Centre Style compares to: Shawn Horcoff 15. Senators-Jordan Schroeder Skill: He makes plays that some players just don’t make at this level. Scouting Report: Jordan is a very dynamic player with high-level skills. An agile and speedy playmaker, Schroeder’s perimeter quickness gets opponents defenses into a panic. His game changing scoring abilities put him in the top ten of the talent pool in this year’s draft class. He played consistent all year long and put up impressive freshmen numbers. His speed and agility in open ice make him an immediate danger whenever he touches the puck. His vision and decision making skills happen fast and create a lot of problems for defenders when he is rushing the puck or setting up on the PP. His intelligence on the ice, ability to adjust to the physical game will make him a very sought after player in the top twenty picks. ISS had him ranked 14th last year. No chance he falls past this spot with Rob on the board. NHL Potential: Goal scorers are hard to find, so he could go high in the draft. Style compares to: Paul Kariya 16. Capitals-Zack Kassian Skill: An absolute bull, Kassian is a huge war machine with a tremendous shot and deceptively good hands. Scouting Report: Kassian is big, mean, talented, smart, and unselfish player who works hard. He is probably the most physically ready player in this draft to play at higher levels. Given time he should be a power forward with the ability to put up good offensive numbers. He has a powerful skating stride, making him a very effective power forward who is difficult for opposition players to defend against. Plays in all situations – Even, PP and PK. Veteran scout Mike Oke says Kassian can “take control of a game. He has a good grasp on what to do in powerplay situations and has a heavy shot. He’s certainly not afraid to go in the heavy traffic areas”. NHL Potential: Power forward. Will make the transition to the next level with within 2 years. Style compares to: Dustin Brown 17. MapleLeafs-Jacob Josefson Skill: Highly skilled at both ends of the ice – very good skating ability and understanding of attack principles. Scouting Report: Josefson maybe the best two-way player at the World U18 Championship, Josefson is a great defensive presence that also has a very good scoring skill set. With tremendous hockey sense, he often played against top opposition lines and forced them to play hard transitional shifts, tiring them out. Very good in tight quarters, he finds ways to create space with the puck. He rarely backs down from rough play and has some grit and the ability to throw hard hits. He is coming off a good rookie season for Djurgarden, in Sweden’s Elite League. More comfortable as a playmaker, he also brings a very good ability to score goals on his own. He would go through the wall for a teammate. Very good showing at the WJHCs. NHL Potential: Power forward with the ability to put up good offensive numbers. Style compares to: Daymond Langkow 18. Panthers-Calvin De Haan Skill: Intelligent rearguard to can log lots of minutes and contribute at both ends. Scouting Report: de Hann is a very good skater and equally effective jumping into or leading the rush, demonstrating good puck handling and passing skills when doing so. He is a very smart player that is solid in both ends. Played huge minutes this year with the Generals in all situations, especially after the Generals traded Del Zotto to the London Knights in early Jan. Moves well laterally and has great vision particularly on the PP. He was a member of the Team Canada – again at this event he played in all situations and logged lots of minutes. In the OHL Coaches Poll was considered among the 3 best Playmakers and Offensive D-men in the Eastern Conference. NHL Potential: He can lead the rush and his hockey smarts will help him earn ice on the PP. Style compares to: Brian Campbell 19. RedWings-John Moore Skill: He has the size and skill to go along with great playmaking abilities. Tremendous skater. Scouting Report: Moore started the 2008-09 season outside of the 1st round but with solid play from start to finish of season, Experienced scouts feel he has moved ahead of most all the other highly rated blueline prospects. Moore is blessed with very light / quick feet that enable him to get to and from the puck/plays in an expeditious manner. In addition, Moore's checking skills have also improved as he is holding his checks better along the boards with improved balance etc. Moore was named the USHL Defenseman of the Year. Had an outstanding year with the Kitchener Rangers in the OHL Priority Draft. NHL Potential: Offensive #1 d-men. Will make the transition to the next level with within 2 years. Sure fire NHLer. Style compares to: Joe Corvo 20. Avalanche-Simon Despres Skill: He is still raw; and has not put the whole package together. Scouting Report: His low ranking here at BRHL2 mock draft may surprise some experts however after watching his slow development we feel he is simply overrated. Ranked #30 we fully expect Despres to be long gone by then, just not by us. He is a big hulking d-man who moves very well and has great size for a d-man. His play is sometimes inconsistent and his puck skills need some improvement. He will have to learn to play more physical. As opposed to using the body when absolutely necessary, he will have to consistently learn to finish checks and step up in the neutral zone. After his team’s early exit from the Play-offs he was added to Canada’s roster at the World U18 in Fargo, ND and again his play was a disappointment. Developed the following year and had a great year with the St. John’s Sea Dogs. NHL Potential: A defensive defenseman. Style compares to: Robyn Regehr 21. Bruins- David Rundblad Skill: His upside is tremendous. Can dominate a PP with his rushing ability or shot. Scouting Report: This slick puck moving d-men has emerged as a legitimate first round candidate for the 2009 NHL Entry draft. The team that drafts him will do so with one thing in mind – to generate offense. Rundblad played well during the SEL-playoffs and was awarded best d-man at the U19 4-nations tournament in Russia. A very skilled puck handler and skater he loves to skate up ice with the puck. He was paired with Hedman for most of the WJC and saw time on the 2nd PP unit as well. He loves to jump up in the play and moves well all over the ice. He has good vision and is able to make the first pass. His game has improved as the year has progressed. The biggest knock on him is his timid defensive play around his own net. NHL Potential: He brings an exciting offensive package that can really excite fans. Style compares to: Mike Green 22. Flames-Louis Leblanc Skill: A highly skilled two-way player with very good hockey sense- Shows good patience with the puck. Scouting Report: This solid two-way forward has proven to scouts that he is the real deal and will be a highly sought after commodity come draft day. A player that earned his draft position as the year went on. He would go through the wall for a teammate. Leblanc is a skilled forward with good hands – displays a nose for the net. A good skater with good size gets in the forecheck well and looks to finish hits. Has a good shot and quick release. Will adapt and play any role given by coach. USHL Rookie of the Year and Omaha Lancers MVP, Leblanc had a great year at Harvard, but some wonder if the fact that he went Ivy league means he is not serious about becoming a professional. He will be an effective checker early in his career, but will contribute offensively with the right opportunity. NHL Potential: Hard-nosed player that everyone would love to have on their team. Style compares to: Ryan Kesler 23. Blackhawks-Peter Holland Skill: Has the ability to dominate, but must show it on a nightly basis. Scouting Report: Holland is a player with good size and a solid frame. A good skater who has the skills and abilities to beat defender wide. Played in all situations for the Storm– at times would be used on the point during the PP. During regroups supports the puck well making himself available for a pass. He generally does not pass up chances to get the puck to the net, plus wins more faceoffs than he loses. Despite having such good size does not consistently show much in the way of physical play. Selected to play for Team Canada at the World U-18 Championships, started tournament as extra forward but towards the end worked his way into the lineup. Has a strong awareness of his defensive responsibilities. NHL Potential: 1st line Centre, and if he continues to progress. Style compares to: Chris Gratton 24. Thrashers-Tomas Tatar Skill: An explosive offensive threat, has great hands and a tremendous shot. His ability to be in the right place at the right time is incredible. Scouting Report: No player saw his 2010 draft stock rise higher then Tatar after WJC tournament. An explosive offensive threat, Tatar has great hands and a tremendous shot. His ability to be in the right place at the right time is incredible. He is a strong skater, who can avoid defenders and create space in a multitude of different manners. Tatar was the source of most of the Slovakian offense and his ability to put the puck in the net and crucial and critical moments is impressive. The biggest knock on Tatar is that he gives inconsistent defensive efforts. A big game player, he sometimes requires a purpose but really gets going when the going gets tough. NHL Potential: Top six forward, he's a dynamic player, and can score. Style compares to: Ales Hemsky 25. Coyotes-Marcus Johansson Skill: An great offensive threat, has great hands and a tremendous shot. ETA-2013 Scouting Report: Playmaking forward with great game sense and vision with the puck. Johansson has been an effective and consistent offensive threat for Sweden at both the U18 and U20 levels for the past couple of seasons. A shifty and technically skilled skater, Johansson has great hands and an excellent touch on the puck. Another young Swede with men’s league experience, he proved that he can be an effective point producer at the next level already, putting up 10 points in 45 games for Farjestad in the Swedish Elite League. Style compares to: Niklas Backstrom 26. Senators-Tim Erixon Skill: Reliable d-man that will play in the league and go unnoticed for 10 years. Scouting Report: This solid two-way defenseman has proven to scouts that he is the real deal and will be a highly sought after commodity come draft day. A well-rounded defender, Erixon is a good skating, smart player who has a good set of hands and can read the play well. Although not overly quick, he positions himself well and plays an aggressive defensive style around his own net. He can get caught following the puck or over committing to the puck side at times, but generally has the skill to get to passes and attacking players before they become dangerous. Erixon attempts to move the puck quickly, which can work for him or against him, depending on the pressure given. NHL Potential: Depth defender. Son of former Ranger Jan Erixon. Style compares to: Kenny Jonsson 27. Senators-Nick Leddy Skill: He loves to be involved offensively and he makes very smart decisions in all three zones. Scouting Report: Leddy’s ability to change the game along with his tremendous hockey sense and puck skills will make him a highly sought after commodity come draft day. His quick vision and passing in his own end makes things happen every time he handles the puck. Offensively he creates opportunities for himself with his smart puck sense. His play at the Minnesota State Tournament, made NHL scouts realize the value this kid will be to any team he plays with. He led his team to a championship and secured the title “Mr. Hockey”, recognizing the top senior player in Minnesota, voted on by NHL scouts. His upside is tremendous and he should be a top player at higher levels. NHL Potential: An offensive d-man that will run a power play and create offense. Style compares to: Alex Goligoski 28. Penguins-Landon Ferraro Skill: A pure goal scorer who can find the net. Has a great shot and release. Will also score the garbage goals. Scouting Report: Ferraro was named the Red Deer Rebels Team MVP. Is it very well known that scoring runs in the family and this season he did not disappoint. A leader on a young team, he displayed his positive influence on a nightly basis. He did battle with consistency but effort was always there. A pure goal scorer who thrives of scoring. Has the killer instinct that once he gets one he wants more. Will be a dominating force on a team that will be much improved next season. Has quickness and is a tremendous skater, and strong defensively, as well as being an offensive threat. Played for Canada’s U-18 team. His upside is tremendous and he should be a top player at higher levels. NHL Potential: A Natural scorer that will score at all levels. A top six forward. Style compares to: Patrick Sharp 29. Flames-Jerry D’Amigo Skill: He has great speed and great offensive anticipation and wins most races for pucks. Scouting Report: His outstanding play on the International scene coupled with the fact he kept elevating his game throughout the year has secured his ranking here at BRHL2 mock draft for the upcoming 2010 BRHL2 draft. The most surprisingly effective American player at the U18s was D’Amigo. He lead the charge most games and showed a very good skill set and level of determination that seemed to be infectious to his teammates. He put up 13 points in 7 games for the Americans and was easily one of their best forwards. He makes good smart quick plays, takes contact well and drives the net without hesitation. Has great leadership traits that should translate very well at the next level. NHL Potential: With his scoring touch, he will be a top-two-line player with his skill. Style compares to: T.J. Oshie 30. Flames-Anton Lander Skill: Intense and intelligent, Lander is very difficult to play against and always noticeable on the ice. Scouting Report: Lander is a two-way checking forward with excellent outside speed. He can make plays at full speed and controls the puck with a lot of confidence. A very unselfish player, Lander is always aware of where his teammates are and makes good crisp passes. He is a hard working forechecker, keeping his feet moving all the time. With a strong quick release wrist shot, he often uses d-men as a screen off the offensive rush. Lander drives the net hard with and without the puck and doesn’t quit on the puck until the whistle goes. Reliable and disciplined, he brings a consistent effort to the rink every game and always improves his team’s chances of winning a game. Will adapt and play any role given by coach. NHL Potential: Fantastic secondary scoring option who can be relied on in critical defensive situations. Style compares to: Mikko Koivu |
